Dr Tracy Kolbe-Alexander: Sports Science Institute, UCT

MRC Career award

Tracy KolbeTitle of talk: A South African Corporate Health Intervention Programme: Developing, implementing and measuring the effectiveness of a comprehensive workplace-based physical activity and health promotion programme

Although physical activity has been associated with reduced burden of non-communicable disease, most South Africans are inactive, highlighting the need for intervention programmes.

Dr Kolbe-Alexander’s group will conduct formative research to characterize environmental, inter- and intra-personal factors which may influence the development of a workplace-based physical activity intervention. The intervention includes the development of a corporate physical activity ‘environmental audit’. Based on the results of the audit, they will develop, multi-faceted theory-based, best-practice interventions, and evaluate implementation. These interventions will aim to increase habitual physical activity and health status. Educational components will address physical activity and health-related knowledge, attitudes and beliefs. Corporate-based leaders will be trained facilitating the intervention’s sustainability.
