Title of talk: Adipose tissue distribution and metabolism explain the obesity-related comorbidities in South African women

Dr Julia Goedecke completed her research at the UCT/MRC Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine.  In addition, funding from the NRF and Royal Society was obtained to complete the adipose tissue sample analyses at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. 

Outline of Work
Dr Goedecke’s research focused on ethnic differences in obesity and the manifestation of the metabolic syndrome in South African women.  She explored the mechanisms underlying this association, in particular examining the role of the adipose tissue depots.  This was examined at a physiological and molecular level, and also incorporated interactions with diet, physical activity, and socio-cultural factors.
