A post has become available for a Senior Scientist in the Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform. The Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform is a dynamic research platform within the Grants Innovation and Product Development Unit of the South African Medical Research Council. The Platform focusses on pre-clinical health research and innovation, aimed at the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Our research includes new and innovative ways for the early detection of diabetes and to improve current therapies of metabolic diseases.

To cover the multifaceted aspects of the post, we require an energetic person with a pharmacology and biochemistry background applicable to diabetes research.

Core Requirements:
  • Master’s degree in Pharmacology with suitable post-graduate training in herb-drug/drug-drug interaction research
  • Ideally the applicants should have a PhD in Pharmacology with three or more years’ experience with studies involving recombinant cytochrome P450, human liver microsomes, hepatic metabolic stability and clearance studies; PXR reporter gene, microRNA and drug transporter target genes, transfection, in vitro intestinal absorption assays (cell-based and PAMPA) and chemical identification of metabolites
  • Experience with post-graduate teaching and supervision
  • Independent and lateral thinking

A salary in the region of R638 951 per annum, total cost-to-company.
